If I recall I looked into pstoedit a while back. The fact that I did not release a package probably means there were problems getting it to compile on OS X. G

that's your next excercise: to get makempy running, i.e. these chars are outlines made by pstoedit; is that installed on your system
(i can probably cook up an alternative using low level pdf but ...)
