to make a minimal example.

When you need a lot of text, pages, floats and whatever to trigger this problem, then you can use commands like \dorecurse{100}{\input tufte} and so on. But in most cases you can end up with a minimal example of just 1-3 pages.
Of course, it can take some time to reduce a complex document to a minimal example, but it's the best you can do, if you want a solution.
