There may be other reasons for using bash, but I wouldn't say that it being the current default is one. Apple doesn't rely on your choice of shell for anything.
First thing I do whenever I get on the shell on my girlfriend's Mac: bash Which puts me in a bash shell. It is hard to get Apple to default to this behavior. I have tried the preferences, but that doesn't help. However, by typeing "bash", I save myself tons of headaches. On the other hand, I have written a few apple scripts that run shell scripts. (Mostly to make it easy for my girlfriend to use.) These apple scripts will use the tcsh shell, so I've learned to try to set up the proper variable for tcsh and so fourth. But I hate tchs!
