According to README.md and the examples there is no usable interface between Lua and Ruby. You can pass Ruby code as a string to mruby.run() but you can't pass the results back to Lua. The latter is required because only Lua can communicate with TeX. Hence IMO mruby isn't very useful, even for other purposes.
