A simple answer is that the standalone distribution is organized so that one can keep a full copy per project or per period, thus assuring that one retains a fully functional version independent of rapid development.

Thanks. Unfortunately it only contains the files from tex/texmf-context, not e.g. the bin directories. /Lars
