Hello, When I try to compile the recent Mark IV formats I get the following error: ! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [pattern memory=80000]. and I don't know which setting it is in texmf.cnf (no pattern_memory, and no variable equal to 80000 either). This problem had already been reported to me by Yannis as he tried to compile the LaTeX format at the end of June. Where should I look for that? Arthur

You want the variable named trie_size. Normally it is set quite a bit higher in texmf.cnf, so this error hints that texmf.cnf is not found at all (80000 is the compile-time default). Best wishes, Taco

Indeed reminiscent of my old LaTeX times.

Yes, that's what I was afraid of ...
(80000 is the compile-time default).
300,000 in the TeX Live texmf.cnf (I think it's TeX Live ...). I wonder if having two pathes in TEXMFCNF is really a good idea, actually (that's what setuptex sets).
