I can "reproduce" the opposite, a extra new lines:
checkout from trunk: beta-0.67.0-2011042407 (rev 4192)
System: i386-linux
Hartmut is working on the backend in truynk, for 0.71 and up. If you
need a more stable version from the repository, use branches/0.70.x
The luatex beta-0.67.0-2011042412 (rev 4171) from branch 0.70.x
works correct, if used for the example I had given:
