It should be dir "\\.\c:\" and it works just fine. See also: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365247(VS.85).aspx#namespaces The UNC syntax is used to access network drives on Windows like so: \\ComputerName\SharedFolder\Resource Stock Lua does not have any problem with UNC paths, so this looks like a bug in luatex but I couldn't locate it in the sources so far.
