sure but why the \lua prefix here? why not \[big|new|...]mathchardef or maybe \mathcharacterdef (and also a \characterdef)
\bigmathchardef sounds interesting. I want some sort of prefix for the sake of predictability, but I do not care much which one. or how about \uni as prefix for unicode related extensions, so \unimathchardef
