Hi Gerben,
The problem is that some people like to use the p* fonts instead of the u* fonts, which is what the type-akb typescript does; however -welcome to the font mess- these p* files are not always packages in distributions,
They should, since they are part of LaTeX. The names (p*) of the 35 base fonts should not change. And I'd guess that the metrics of the corresponding tfm files don't change over the time.
or names change, or ... It all has to do with not wanting to ship a few more tfm files i guess. Even worse: the metrics differ. This is just one of the reasons why i always generate my own metrics (texnansi-u* and such)
The reference uplr8t Gerben came across is part of the berry typescript, which IMO should be removed from ConTeXt. It just confuses users. Patrick (We should move this discussion to dev-context)

ok, just propose the change (kind of funny that those typescripts keep changing while in principle that part of tex live should be stable -) Hans ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | fax: 038 477 53 74 | www.pragma-ade.com | www.pragma-pod.nl -----------------------------------------------------------------

Nothing is completely stable within the texmf tree :-) I'm not sure if the next remarks help or only muddy the situation even more, but will post them anyway: Those 'u' things appeared when ghostscript started shipping PFB files that could be used to fake Adobe's base35 fonts reasonably well. The 'u' metrics (with 'adobe-ish' family names) are intended for use with those non-adobe PFB files (because these are, of course, not 100% identical to the adobe versions). Either way, The problem is, it seems, that context currently assumes that the latex psnfss is present in the installation, and it might very well not be. Greetings, Taco

only type-akb assumes this (i.e. patrick assumes it); i don;t even know if i have psnfss on my machine (i never bothered to check it in the minimals which are the kind of test-reference set of files needed) Hans ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | fax: 038 477 53 74 | www.pragma-ade.com | www.pragma-pod.nl -----------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Hans,

I hope you did read my "over the time". I know that fontinst (PSNFSS) and afm2tfm (can) produce different output. I have to dig out old CTAN mirrors to get an idea of the (non) changing PSNFSS metrics. [...]

I thought about removing the berry typescript. But I see that you distribute the upl* metrics, so they can actually be used. Patrick -- ConTeXt wiki: http://contextgarden.net
