It looks like this is going to work out. Hans helped me with the mysql database access, and the sha2 library in luametatex means I can actually check user passwords. Finally, homebrew allows me to have a local site to play with on my macbook (not having to do everything remotely is a much more convenient way to work). Now I ‘just’ need to write a bunch of lua code to replace the 12k lines of perl code. If nothing else, this should make for a fun talk at the next meeting.
