Hans, Would it be possible to add the 'framed' functionality of \startbackground to \definetextbackground? Should be doable using some extra metafont macros, right? Then \startbackground could be flagged as obsolete. ;-) Taco

technically, yes; we can make a kind of predefined textbackground of it you can 'collectorize' it -) Hans
