It's impossible to do a paginator with CSS2.1 and  CSS3 is still a draft.  Some kind of javascript is necessary then.
Of course you can also use a heavy xslt -> standard xhtml , but still you need javascript to paginate.

I've added html5 to my personal notes "nice idea to explore  for next eurotex meeting ".
