On my machine (Mac OS X 10.5.2) with only the MacTeX distribution (TeX Live 2007 for Mac) installed no environment variable whatsoever is set that's related to TeX in any way ...
Same here currently, but I have had many linuxes with TEXINPUTS set, sometimes without even a tex installed at all, and traditionally tex on dos/win needed a bunch of environment variables as well. But never mind that, all should be good now. Best wishes, Taco
